More than ten years ago, once I realised that publishing a book wouldn't allow me to immediately retire, I came up with a quirky business idea. I loved princesses. I loved royal history. And I thought it would be fun to create an educational programme for girls that incorporated both. So Princess Prep was born.
The concept was simple: a week in London for little girls to explore real castles while learning about royal history, royal etiquette, and the positive attributes of both real and fictional princesses.
From Radio Silence to Royal Mania
I designed the website myself and took out a tiny ad in the New York Times. At first, there was complete radio silence. Then Kate Middleton's engagement to Prince William was announced — and suddenly I couldn't keep up with the press requests.
In the midst of the royal mania, I organised a series of "royal tea parties" for little girls to celebrate the upcoming wedding. These were simple, quite silly afternoons: curtseying to a cardboard cutout of the Queen, practising walking with books on our heads, finishing with tea and scones. London's expats clambered along en masse. And so did the world's press.

The coverage was staggering — from the Guardian to Time magazine, BBC World, CNN, and every European news agency you can think of. I literally had to turn cameras away at the door. I was baffled. Was I really the only person on the planet who knew how to curtsey?
The Demand That Changed Everything
What surprised me most was this: almost without exception, every mother who contacted me about enrolling her daughter would also ask whether something similar existed for grown-up women. Back then, I wasn't ready to deal with that demand. But I'm ready now.
