Portugal’s golfing landscape is in the midst of a renaissance in 2025. Three remarkable new golf courses have emerged alongside high impact renovations and initiatives that are reshaping both the experience and the image of golf in the region.
Pinheirinho Golf Course at Comporta – A Natural Invitation Only Retreat
A short drive from the Portuguese capital this exclusive eighteen hole course opened quietly in the sands of Comporta. Designed by Jorge Santana da Silva the layout weaves through dunes and pine forest. Large undulating greens, generous fairways and carefully placed bunkers provide a peaceful and elegant golfing experience that honours the local environment and the spirit of the Alentejo coast. Entry is strictly by invitation underscoring its Exclusivity.
Els Club Vilamoura – Ernie Els Signature Private Club in the Algarve
Summer 2025 marks the opening of The Els Club Vilamoura. Designed by legendary golfer Ernie Els and developed in partnership with Arrow Global this club is the first truly private members only facility in the Algarve. It occupies the old Victoria course site and features a new championship layout that blends strategic play with natural scenic features. The club includes refined amenities such as the 261 Bar & Restaurant and the design reflects a dedication to both environmental sustainability and long term excellence.
“Portugal has embraced a dynamic fusion of design excellence, exclusivity, environmentalthoughtfulness and a renewed commitment to international golf presence.”
Torre Course at Terras da Comporta – Sergio Garcia’s Debut Solo Design
On June 16 2025 the Torre Course hosted its soft opening. Designed by Sergio Garcia this par 72 course is set in a grand natural landscape of pine forest rice paddies and sandy terrain just an hour south of Lisbon. The design demands precision over power with narrow fairways, small greens and strategic bunkering. Multiple tee options make the course accessible for a variety of players. The experience is elevated by the serene surroundings and a thoughtful layout.
Why 2025 Represents a Turning Point
The trio of new courses, Pinheirinho with its calm intimacy, Els Club Vilamoura with its private appeal and Torre with its natural precision represent fresh identity pillars. Meanwhile renovations and new developments across Salgados Terras da Comporta and Madeira expand access and reinforce regional investment. Together with women’s professional golf making a strong reappearance at Vidago Palace the year heralds a redefined golfing identity for Portugal.
