I became fascinated by Korean culture in 2016, and ten years later, here I am living my dream in South Korea. It all started with K-pop, then I began learning Korean while I was still in Portugal. After completing my master's degree, I took a gap year and spent it living in Seoul on a Working Holiday Visa. A few years later, I returned to backpack across the country for three months and started guiding tour groups. Now, I'm pursuing a master's degree in Korean Cultural Studies.
Hanok villages are among Korea's most popular tourist attractions, showcasing whole neighbourhoods with traditional wooden houses. If you're looking for a less touristy experience, I highly recommend visiting Eunpyeong Hanok Village, where you're sure to capture some of the best photos of your trip!
Royal palaces and Buddhist temples in Korea are decorated with colourful patterns known as dancheong. The intricate designs are so mesmerising, I never get tired of admiring them. In Jongno, don't miss Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces or Jogyesa Temple. In Gangnam, visit Bongeunsa Temple to discover these vibrant works of art.
70% of South Korea is covered by mountains and Seoul is no exception, with plenty of trails to explore. Bukhansan is my go-to hiking spot, especially in autumn, boasting Seoul's highest peak, with incredible views of the city, even without reaching the top.
One of the things I love most about Korean food is how balanced it is. Meals are typically served with a variety of vegetable-based side dishes, fermented foods that are great for your health, and soup to accompany the main dish. On the other hand, Korea is also famous for its mouth-watering street food. Here's a tip: if you want to try a bit of everything—even restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide—head to Myeongdong in the evening.
Seoul is home to some of the world's most incredible concerts, especially if you love elaborate choreographies, a defining feature of K-pop performances. BTS are my favourite artists, and I've had the privilege of seeing them twice in Korea, but I also enjoy attending concerts by lesser-known artists. If you have the chance, I highly recommend attending a concert while you're here!
