Nicole Miyahara is a digital marketer and traveller who moved to Porto in 2022 from California. @nicoleinportugal

We moved to Porto during the pandemic when, like many, we took pause and inventory of our lives and decided to spend the next chapter abroad. Since we had never been to Portugal before, I did a lot of research on which city to choose and didn’t see many people talking about daily life in Porto. I knew that once I moved I would use my documentary filmmaking degree to share my new life in Portugal on social media.

Walk from Ribeira to Foz

I recently started listening to audiobooks and my favorite way to do this is by walking from Praça do Infante D. Henrique all the way down to Foz. It’s a flat and leisurely walk right next to the gorgeous Douro River.

Serralves

Serralves is my favorite place to see contemporary art in Porto. They get some really big exhibitions like Yayoi Kusama last year and often host free events featuring live art and tons of activities for kids. You can make an entire day of it and enjoy the grounds, the villa, and the treetop walk. It always feels like you’ve left the hustle and bustle of the city behind.

Rota do Chá

If you love tea, visit Rota do Chá. The restaurant is in a traditional Portuguese home with decor that reflects the historical tea trade route. There’s so many tea options and a shop so you can bring some home. I organize an occasional English-language book swap in the room with all the books and old photos.

Quinta do Covelo

If you’re in the area after the flea market head to nearby Quinta do Covelo. It’s a big beautiful park with lots of shady spots and benches to relax. It’s also the only park in the city with an enclosed dog park and a separate children’s park with a cafe. The Portuguese really know what they’re doing by enjoying a glass of wine while watching their kids run around.

Flea Market - Marquês neighborhood

There’s nothing I love more than treasure hunting on a Saturday morning. The flea market at the Marquês metro station always has a good selection of home goods and clothes. When you have to pack everything you own into a suitcase, you leave a lot of things behind. Finding vintage rugs to furnish my home and make it feel like mine has been a long process but it’s been really fun and you can learn a lot about the culture from traditional everyday items. Some of my favorite things to collect are brass candle stick holders, baskets, and glassware.
