Thinking of Portugal? Smart advice for those ready to make the move

Property

We help individuals, families, and businesses relocate to Portugal – with clarity, care, and confidence.

Elena, founder of RelyOn Relocation®, gives her expert insight into what expats need to know before making the move to Portugal — from practical legal steps to lifestyle choices that really matter.

Can I keep my U.S. or UK passport and still apply for Portuguese citizenship?
Absolutely. Portugal permits dual citizenship, which means you can hold both nationalities and enjoy the freedom of EU mobility without giving up your current passport. It’s one of the most appealing aspects of long-term relocation here.

Which cities are best for expats to settle in?
That really depends on your lifestyle. Lisbon is dynamic and international, but more expensive. Porto is charming and slightly more relaxed. Cascais is great for families, and towns like Ericeira or Lagos are perfect for people who want to enjoy a slower pace of life by the coast.

Should newcomers rent or buy property when they arrive?
Most of our clients choose to rent first. It gives them time to explore neighborhoods and get a feel for where they’d truly like to settle. That said, the Portuguese property market still offers great long-term value, particularly outside the larger cities.

Is it really possible for expats to pay zero tax on foreign income?
In many cases, yes. Portugal’s NHR 2.0 (or IFICI) regime allows certain foreign income — like pensions, dividends, or royalties — to be tax-exempt. But it has to be structured properly from the start, and that’s where expert support makes a big difference.

What sets RelyOn Relocation® apart?
We offer a full relocation service — everything from visas and tax planning to banking, real estate, schools, and handling immigration appointments. It’s a confusing process if you try to go it alone, so we make sure our clients feel guided, informed, and supported every step of the way.
