Building the University of Tomorrow: An Interview with Boris Walbaum
Boris Walbaum is the founder of Forward College, an innovative and fast-growing institution.
How would you describe Forward College?
Forward College is a European higher-education institution created to prepare students for the realities and responsibilities of the 21st century. We offer bachelor’s degrees in partnership with leading universities such as King’s College London and the London School of Economics. We combine rigorous studies with leadership development, personal growth and real-world experience. Our goal is to educate not only top students, but also future leaders who are ethical, adaptable and ready to have a positive impact on society.
What motivated you to create Forward College?
Throughout my career, in public policy and education, I became convinced that traditional universities often prepare students for exams rather than for life. The world is changing fast: technological disruption, climate challenges or geopolitical tensions are reshaping our societies. Young people need strong analytical skills, but they also need emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work across cultures.
What are the key benefits of Forward College programmes?
First, academic rigour. Our students follow demanding curricula designed and assessed by top universities. Second, small cohorts. With around fifteen students per class, we can offer close mentoring and personalised feedback. Third, leadership and personal development. Each student works with coaches, takes part in collective projects and reflects on their values, strengths and areas of progress. Finally, international immersion: students live and study in three different countries, across our campuses in Paris, Lisbon and Berlin.
Forward College is often described as an innovative school. In what way?
Innovation for us is not about technology for its own sake; it is about rethinking the learning experience. We use active pedagogy, project-based learning, interdisciplinary approaches and AI tools. Students do not just listen to lectures — they collaborate, debate and confront real problems. We also integrate entrepreneurship and social engagement, encouraging students to take initiative and test ideas in the real world.
Why do you believe Forward College is particularly suited to today’s generation?
Because it speaks to their aspirations. Many young people want more than a degree; they want meaning, impact and a sense of belonging. At Forward, they find a strong community, inspiring faculty and an environment that challenges them intellectually while supporting them personally. They learn to think independently, lead with humility and act responsibly.
Finally, what is your vision for the future of Forward College?
My vision is to make Forward a reference in European higher education for holistic, purpose-driven learning. I hope our graduates will become leaders who combine competence with conscience, ambition with responsibility.
