X-Pat Files

Clint Lewis is an award-winning interior designer based in Lisbon with over 18 years of experience creating refined, liveable spaces with a blend of modern elegance and warmth.

What defines your design philosophy and aesthetic?

For me, design has always been about how people truly live and connect with a space — that relationship has always fascinated me. It’s not just about how a space looks in a photograph. Our design philosophy is grounded in modern elegance, creating interiors that are beautiful and welcoming, yet always deeply practical.

How does Portugal influence your work?

Portugal inspires me constantly — the abundant and unique lighting and colours, the people, and being on the edge of the powerful Atlantic Ocean. It’s a country rich with history yet alive with modern elements, and that balance is something that comes through in my work. Having started my career in South Africa, and now living in Portugal for over eight years, I value the way I can bring my African background together with the roots I’ve found here, creating a design language that feels layered and unique.

“Each design decision is a reflection of passion, and every space is a celebration of life’s finest moments.”

Can you share a project that best represents your studio’s approach?

One project that reflects our approach is Art House, a modern villa just north of Lisbon. It was a full renovation and furnishing project, redesigned as a peaceful retreat for an international family. Clean lines, timeless materials, and custom details — from a wine storage unit to a feature fireplace — created a space that feels both elegant and functional. With original artworks integrated throughout and superior cabinetry and lighting, it stands as an example of our work in Portugal’s high-end residential market: modern, warm, and distinctly personal.

What excites you most about interior design right now?

I love that there’s a growing awareness of how much our surroundings affect our well-being. People are more conscious than ever that the way we design and interact with our surroundings has a direct impact on how we feel every day. For me, that’s exciting — creating spaces that not only look beautiful but genuinely support people’s lifestyles and sense of balance.

What do you want clients to feel when they enter a space you’ve designed?

I want them to feel that everything simply makes sense — that they naturally fold into the space, becoming one with it, as if there’s an effortless harmony between them and their surroundings. When a space makes you feel this way, it often appears simple, but that ease is the result of immense thought, detail, and the invisible artistry of design. For me, the greatest success is when someone walks in, feels completely at home, and can’t quite explain why.
