A Weekend in Abu Dhabi

A cosmopolitan capital where tradition meets modern luxury, Abu Dhabi combines glittering skyscrapers, serene beaches, and rich Arabian heritage – all framed by the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf.

Where to Stay

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort

Perched on the pristine shores of Saadiyat Island, this vast resort offers a blend of refined elegance and relaxed beachside luxury. Designed with a Mediterranean influence, the resort’s whitewashed façades, terracotta roofs, and arch-framed balconies give it an airy, coastal charm, while inside, Arabian touches like intricate latticework and rich textiles add a sense of place.

Famed for its direct access to one of the UAE’s most beautiful natural beaches, where powdery white sand meets warm, clear waters, it’s a beach lover’s dream. Choose from multiple pools, including an adults-only infinity pool overlooking the Gulf, or relax by the twinkling sea.

The Rooms

Spacious and ultra luxurious, the rooms are all soft neutral tones, stunning white marble bathrooms, with a beautiful egg shaped bathtub with a seaview, as well as private balconies or terraces with more sweeping sea views.

The St. Regis signature butler service adds a personalized touch, with the likes of the lovely Dashan and Harshani going the extra mile to tend to your every need! From ordering your taxis, making dinner reservations and even delivering your morning coffee just the way you like it. Plush bedding, perfect aircon and (did we mention) those views mean you won't want to ever leave. www.marriott.com

The Food

The resort’s dining scene is a destination in itself.

Head to Olea for international cuisine with a Middle Eastern twist and the most impressive breakfast spread ever - everything from curries to shakshuka, a plethora of tropical fruits, a giant pastry selection, eggs of all kinds, salads, chia seeds puddings ten different ways and much more! The royal eggs benedict are simply delicious. At lunchtime there’s also a delicious buffet with classics like salmon in lemon sauce, steak with mushrooms and caesar salad.

For dinner try Sontaya (meaning “sunset” in Thai) set amidst floating pavilions. It's all about Southeast Asian flavours. The chef makes the best beef gyoza dim sum, tasty green curry and melt-in-the-mouth cod in black miso. At the beachside try the hip Buddha-Bar Beach where it’s all about the sushi - whether you pick the spicy salmon or the classic Californian, or even the wagyu steak sushi, they are all utterly delicious. The vibe is elegant yet laid back and the food is simply fantastic. Don’t miss the signature date pudding or a pot of mint tea to round off your evening.

Another must do? High tea at Ginori where you can sample a delicious cup of Darjeeling in beautiful china, a ‘tree’ covered in tiny, dainty parcels of amazing pastries - one prettier than the next - and the most delicious scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam - to rival any of Cornwall’s finest.

Hit the Spa

The Iridium Spa is all about indulgence, with 12 treatment suites, plunge pools, and therapies that incorporate local ingredients like Arabian oud and desert rose. If you’d prefer a more active experience, the resort’s state-of-the-art fitness center and yoga pavilion are ideal, and there’s even an 18-hole championship golf course next door not to mention complimentary tennis and squash courts.

Where to Shop

Abu Dhabi’s shopping scene is a mix of ultra-modern malls and traditional souks. The Galleria Al Maryah Island is the city’s most upscale retail destination, with designer boutiques, gourmet dining, and waterfront views. Yas Mall is also worth a trip for classic brands like Abercrombie and Fitch, Accessorize, Hollister and even a Hamleys outpost! For a more traditional experience, head to Mina Zayed for the Carpet Souk or the bustling Dates Market -ideal for gifts that feel truly local.

See the Sights

Abu Dhabi is home to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a marvel of white marble, gold leaf, and intricate mosaics, particularly magical at sunset. Art lovers should check out The Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Parisian museum’s sister for world-class art, while Qasr Al Watan, the Presidential Palace, also offers a deep dive into Emirati culture.
Need some entertainment action? Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld are both accessible with the Yas Express shuttle connecting the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort to Yas Island.

For immersion into nature, take a kayaking tour through the Eastern Mangroves or simply watch dolphins from Saadiyat’s shores.
