Where are you based?

We're an American family originally from the Dallas area, now based in Italy. Almost 4 years ago, a trip to Italy changed our perspective on living. Villa Bertolli, in Lucca, Tuscany, just 10 minutes outside the city centre, became a foundation to build that life upon. The villa became our family home and, eventually, the heart of R Maison. We also have a home on Lake Como, so we share a life between Tuscany and the lake.

And why Italy?

Italy has a way of making everyday life feel rich: a long lunch, a conversation at the market, a table set for friends. We were drawn to its beauty, of course, but also to the value placed on family, food, craftsmanship and time spent together. Those things felt more in touch with the life we wanted to create.

Tell us about your life journey leading to the world of luxury hospitality.

Our path into hospitality began at home. As we restored Villa Bertolli, built in 1922 and once connected to the Bertolli olive oil family, we found ourselves thinking beyond the aesthetic. We thought about how people would feel in our spaces: where they would gather, what they would eat, and what they might remember after leaving. We've always had a passion for sharing what we have with others. Sharing that journey became R Maison, and the idea of welcoming guests grew naturally from there.

Was it a childhood dream to undertake a major renovation in Europe?

We can't say we grew up dreaming to restore a villa in Tuscany! But we have always loved homes with history and the feeling that a place has a story to tell long before us. Villa Bertolli asked more of us than we could have imagined, but as stewards of the villa, it has also given us the rare opportunity to care for a piece of its history while making room for our family's next chapter.

How was starting this business in Italy for you? Any advice?

Moving a family from Texas to Italy while restoring a historic property has required patience, flexibility and a sense of humour. We've learned to ask questions, the importance of building relationships and accept that some things take longer than expected. Our advice would be to give yourself time to truly understand the place and the people, and then decide how those elements align with your own aspirations. Some of the best moments we've experienced here have derived from being open to all things new and unfamiliar. And sometimes they're spontaneous and unexpected.

What have been the key turning points in your life?

Choosing to move our family from Texas to Italy was the obvious one. Finding Villa Bertolli was another: what began as a home and restoration project became the inception of R Maison. Sharing the process brought us into conversation with people around the world who share the same passion for curated spaces, meaningful travel and the beautiful simplicity of everyday life. That has opened a new chapter for us.

Any role models?

We're inspired by people who build something with care and conviction, especially those who honour what came before them while finding a way to make it their own. Living in a country such as Italy, with not only a rich history but also rich in its food culture, has deepened our appreciation for the craftspeople, growers and family businesses whose knowledge has been passed down through generations.

"When a place has a story, take the time to listen before adding your own."

How do you define luxury?

To us, luxury is the freedom to be fully present. It's thoughtful details, generous hospitality and time with the people you love. Our own luxury is a full table at Villa Bertolli, a meal that lasts longer than planned, and no one in a hurry to leave.

What is on your Christmas wishlist?

More time together, more than a few home-cooked meals around the table (which always takes more time to prepare, than to eat), and being fully present in the moment.

How is life in your expat home?

Our life in Italy is full, sometimes unpredictable, but also rewarding. Living here taught us that it's the everyday moments that are equally as beautiful as the ones that are celebrated.

Expat or local?

A bit of both. We'll always bring our American roots to the table, but Italy is home, and we're grateful for the people and traditions that have welcomed us into life here.
