What prompted you to come to Portugal?
Having lived a fulfilling life in South Africa, I relocated to the sunny shores of the Algarve as it afforded me a similar lifestyle and it is where I felt at home.
Was it a childhood dream to become an interior designer?
I had always been a creative child and teen, putting my skills to use in other areas of textile design. I actually started out in fashion design and progressed my way into the world of interiors.
How did launching your own company come along?
Choosing to go solo after many years working with some inspiring people motivated me to launch my business. As I was an already established interior designer I wanted to further solidify my position in the Algarve and bring my clients a unique experience.
Any words of wisdom?
Accept what is, let go of what was, have faith in what will be. Sometimes you have to let go to let new things come in.
“Always remember you are exactly where you need to be right now and to enjoy the process!”
What’s your style?
I would describe my style as relaxed, organic and authentic. I love inspiring African décor, pattern play and authentic Portuguese craftsmanship in my work. Drawing inspiration from my upbringing and where I currently live, I gravitate towards calming colour palettes, interesting patterns and textures as well as timeless furniture design that won’t date.
Any tips for bringing your home up to date?
Never underestimate what a fresh lick of paint can do for any space, you’d be surprised how colour palettes and trends shift over the years. Evaluate your space, ask yourself what is working and what isn’t, it could be as simple as decluttering furniture and limiting décor items within a space. Make simple changes with modern fixtures or fittings without a complete overhaul. Door handles, kitchen cabinet knobs, soft furnishings and bathroom fittings can uplift your home and bring it into the 21st century.
How do you make a house a home?
The idea of turning houses into homes, in my opinion, comes from the feeling of comfort and togetherness. Bringing people together, whether it be family or friends inspires many of my designs to create inclusive living experiences and memory making. Having a place within your home to have a quiet moment to yourself or a place of comfort is where home is…
Top 3 ‘interior’ tips?
- Less is more. Look at your space when adding decorative items and always take something away. Creating a considered space that is less cluttered will always bring a sense of peace. Calm over chaos!
- Play with texture. Do not be afraid to add textured items to your home. This could be textured scatter cushions, high pile rugs or hanging tapestry to create dynamic contrast.
- Invest in a mix of furniture items. Having a combination of practical and personality pieces that will compliment your individual style and that will not become outdated as seasonal trends change is always a winner.
Favourite project so far?
I get asked this question a lot and it is so hard to pinpoint a favourite. All of the projects I have worked on to date are amazing and unique in their own ways. Our personalised approach to managing interior design projects means we get to build relationships with our clients and partners, each of which makes our work enjoyable and memorable.
How is life in the Algarve?
Life in the Algarve is good! I love living in this part of the world and am lucky to call it home. When I am not working, you can find me taking ample beach walks with our children, having a braai (BBQ) with family and friends, exploring our beautiful country and kicking back listening to some good tunes. I enjoy being surrounded by nature and draw inspiration from the people and places around me.
We have great weather, wholesome food, safety and the work-life balance leads us to live healthier and more fulfilled lives. I have to say we are quite spoiled here!
“I love anything bohemian, earthy, organic and natural.”
Expat or a local?
Although I was raised in South Africa, I was born in Lisbon. I relocated to the Algarve in 1999 and like to consider myself a local.
